Book Checkout Policies & Procedures
We are thrilled that our students love to check out Media Center books!!
Students in K and 1 are checking out one book at a time right now. Later in the year, or as the class is ready in the teacher's estimation, they may begin checking out 2 books. That will be determined by the teacher and Media Specialist. Additionally, K and 1 students keep their books in the classroom until at least January. At that time, the teacher may begin allowing students to bring books home. However, students and their family will have to pay the replacement cost for any books they lose or damage, both while at school and at home, so PLEASE be kind to our books! :)
Students in 2nd -5th may check out 2 books, provided they don't have any lost, damaged or overdue books. Students and their family will have to pay the replacement cost for any books they lose or damage, both while at school and at home, so PLEASE be kind to our books! :)
Students who reach the GOLD LEVEL on Reading Counts get to check out THREE books from the Media Center! This is the reward most students have asked for rather than getting a free paperback book as their RC reward.
Throughout the year, we discuss how to care for our books so that they will not get lost or damaged. Here are some basic guidelines:

Throughout the year, we discuss how to care for our books so that they will not get lost or damaged. Here are some basic guidelines:
- Keep books away from pets.
- Keep toddlers & babies away from books.
- Use clean hands to read books.
- Keep books inside. (You'd be surprised by how many have been damaged when left outside in the dew or rain.)
- Store books in a safe place at home so you always know where they are.
- Consider a large zip-lock bag to carry books if the lunch box goes in backpack with books. (A water bottle, juice box, or thermos, etc. can easily leak.)
- Return books on time.
- Pay for lost or damaged books promptly.
Lost or Damaged Books
When a student checks out a book it is his/her responsibility to return the book in good condition. If a student has lost or damaged a book, a letter will be sent home to his/her parents/guardians informing them of the title and the replacement cost. Lost or damaged books may be paid for in cash (exact change ONLY) or check (including phone number, made payable to the MCES Media Center). A receipt will be issued upon payment.
If a book has been lost, paid for, and then found and returned in good condition before a replacement copy has been purchased, a refund may be issued. If a replacement book has already been ordered, there will not be a refund.
Please understand that students may not have more than 2 library books checked out at a time, so if they have one that is lost or damaged, they can only check out one book. If they have 2 that are lost or damaged, they cannot check out any books until at least one has been paid for or returned in good condition.
Several K and 1st teachers are having students keep t heir Media Center books in the classroom, rather than allowing students to bring them home. This is at the teacher's discretion and will help prevent lost or damaged books. When teachers feel that Kinder or 1st grade students are ready to take Media Center books home, they will allow them to do so. Right now, most of our Kinder and 1st grade students just aren't quite ready for that responsibility yet.

Book Donations
The MCES Media Center is happy to accept your book donations! We do not, however, accept any items "on loan."
Please donate only those books that are clean and in good condition. Once books have been donated to the Media Center, they become the property of Manatee Cove Elementary. They may be added to our library collection, given to teachers for their classroom libraries, given to students or discarded, depending upon our needs at the time of the donation. If we find any books to be inappropriate for elementary school use, they will be discarded.
Thank you so much for thinking of us when you clean out your children's bookshelves! Those gently used books will be much appreciated by all!
